Access more memory, even on a 32-bit system
Posted by dvanarsd on February 7, 2009
Windows Secrets has advice on how to Access more memory, even on a 32-bit system.
“all non-server 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Vista impose a memory limit of 4GB. Your system may allow you to install more than this amount of RAM, but with few exceptions, the extra memory won’t do Windows or your applications any good.”
“Moreover, even if you have 4GB of memory installed in your PC, you may not be able to use it all. For example, if your video card comes with 1MB of memory and you have 4GB of RAM, your system actually has 5GB of memory physically installed. But Windows will use only 4GB of that total, regardless.”
WARNING: this may mean data loss if you have a power outage. It’s safer to use this on a computer with a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) or a laptop with a battery fully charged.

Finding drivers
Posted by dvanarsd on January 7, 2009
Smart Computing has an article (January 2009) on resources for finding that latest or hard-to-find driver for your hardware.
Along with the manufacturers’ sites and the operating system’s maker, you might try:
- DriverAgent.com, which has a scan for good and bad drivers, but requires payment if you get the updated driver through them. Uses a scan you download to your computer.
- DriverSearch.com is a search engine specifically for drivers.
- WinDrivers.com requires a free Internet.com account and covers a wide variety of drivers.

Vista System Diagnostic and where it hides
Posted by dvanarsd on March 4, 2008
Internet Fixes has advice on where to find the System Diagnostic in Windows Vista and run it to check out your system.
It’s a good idea to do this and let it finish before you start doing anything else that session. You can get a printout of the results called a “system health report”.
You do need Administrator rights to run this.

Secunia Software Inspector checks for updates free
Posted by dvanarsd on January 15, 2008
Secunia Software Inspector checks your computer online for unpatched software for the more common programs, and reports what you need to patch/update to be safer. This is free, and does not keep any confidential data from your computer. This scan will find software (including the operating system) with known security flaws for which patches exist. The on-screen report lists your updated apps (with a green checkmark) and nonupdated apps (with a red X). If you have multiple copies of a single application installed, the report will list each version. Click the “+” icon to the left of each item for more information, including the specific path to each file.
