Kim Komando has a post on How to let nosy guests on your PC or Mac.

Kim is very good about explaining things for the non-technical user.

Protect yourself by setting up a Guest account. This gives your guests limited access to your computer. It doesn’t require a password to log in. Users simply click the Guest account icon. Once logged in, they’ll have access to all your programs. But your personal files will be off-limits. And they won’t be able to install any programs.”

For Windows XP/Vista/7 and Macs.
