Tips includes not using Internet Explorer (Chrome will be updated a year more, Firefox a while longer).
Keep your Java and other programs up to date. However, you may find that some of them will no longer have updates that work on XP after a certain time.

If your computer is too old to upgrade to a newer Windows, you might consider changing to another operating system, such as Linux (the Zorin version can be set to work a lot like XP, for example, says one reviewer who tried it).
