Utopia Documents for scientific articles

Posted on June 11, 2012. Filed under: Adobe Acrobat, Freeware/Shareware, PDF | Tags: , , |

Utopia Documents asked for a plug — looks like they have a useful piece of freeware, especially for faculty and scientists.

For Windows, Mac and Linux.  See another perspective by an early user at Aspen Biosciences.

From the makers: “Utopia Documents v2.0, is a free PDF reader that connects the static content of scientific articles to the dynamic world of online content.

Utopia Documents gives you immediate access to an article’s metadata and browse the relationship it has with the world at large. It generates a formatted citation for use in your own work (a menu with seven common reference formats is given), follow bibliographic links to cited articles, get your hands on a document’s data at the click of a button. Utopia Documents makes it easy to explore an article’s content and claims, and investigate other recent articles that discuss the same or similar topics. Various extensions provide links to the blogosphere, online data sources and to social media sites, so you can see what other researchers have been saying about not only the article you’re reading, but its subject matter too. Utopia Documents’ Figure Browser makes it easy to see the illustrations in an article, providing a graphical overview of a paper’s content, and an easy way to navigate from figure to figure.

Utopia Documents allows you to make private notes for yourself, annotate a document for others to see or take part in an online discussion. Looking for clarification of given terms? Or more information about them? Do just that, with integrated semantic search. Interact directly with curated database entries; play with molecular structures in 3D; edit sequence and alignment data; even plot and export tabular data. Stay up to date with the latest news. Utopia connects what you read with live data from Altmetric, Mendeley, CrossRef, Scibite and others.
