Service-now.com VPN instructions

UAFS Service-now.com has instructions on using the Virtual Private Network to access the campus network from off-campus.

For example, if you leave your computer on but logged out, you could connect and login from off-campus and operate as if you were sitting in front of your computer on campus.

Unlocker for those undeletable moments

UNLOCKER 1.8.7 BY CEDRICK ‘NITCH’ COLLOMB is freeware that lets you delete files that Windows has locked while in use.

This is risky (may cause a crash or worse) but for certain files, it may be the only way to handle them.  That goes especially for virus/trojan/other malware programs.

Recommended by MaximumPC magazine.

Free for personal use, it “lets you access your partner’s PC or transmits your screen to your partner to present the easy way, without having to configure your firewall.”

Getmac is for networking, not Apples

When you are working with networks, it helps to have the Media Access Control (MAC) address of your computer network card.

The easy way to find it in XP is using the getmac command, but there are some additional features available.

Internet Fixes has instructions on the getmac command.

Another method is to use the command for ipconfig:

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Click on Run
  3. Type ipconfig/all

Microsoft Office viewers are available if you don’t have Microsoft Office programs. Click here for the download page for viewers for all MS Office products, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook, Access, and Visio.

Remember: you can see the files with these viewers, but you cannot edit them in any way.

You can also use LibreOffice (freeware compatible with MS Office Suite before 2007) to view Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Access files (before 2007) as well as edit and save them to MS Office formats such as 97-2003 formats.

Remember: you must not use 2007 formats (ending in “x” such as “.docx“) if you want to use other programs such as LibreOffice, WordPerfect, etc. to view or edit them reliably.
