Best Free Paint Programs

Gizmo’s Freeware has Paint programs—when we talk about them some people may interpret them generally as a raster or bitmap editor, or wrongly as vector-graphic drawing software. Even though they have some similarities, paint programs are really a different class of product.

OCR Terminal: Online OCR

Posted on February 21, 2010. Filed under: Freeware/Shareware, Graphics, PDF | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

OCR Terminal: Online OCR will let you Convert PDF to Word, JPEG to Word.

This will allow you to convert up to 20 pages a month for free (more if you pay).

A PDF file may not be usable in a Word (or other word processor) document.  A picture of text scanned in is definitely nothing more than a pattern of pixels to a computer.  These need to be converted to text by an OCR (optical character recognition) program, which basically guesses which groups of pixels look like letters.

Be aware that ANY such program is only making best guesses, and may make mistakes.  You need to proofread the results and compare to the original to find them.

GIF or JPG or PNG on a web page?

Posted on August 25, 2008. Filed under: Graphics, Web site creation | Tags: , , , , , , |

Drew Kaplan of DAK has a great quick explanation of how to select the right format graphics file for your web page — do you want it as a GIF, a JPG, or a PNG?

If you’re using drawings with flat color as opposed to shading, GIFs are your best bet.
They can contain up to 256 colors and they compress the file size by simply looking at the next pixel(s) in line and if they’re the same, storing that information instead of storing the pixel information individually.
So if you have flat color, where 10 adjacent pixels are the same, this is your best choice.
If you have a photograph with shading like the sky, the sea or people’s faces, then JPEG is your choice because it preserves the shading.
It does this by throwing away pixels that it doesn’t think you’ll see. And the truth is, it can often throw away 60-80% without dramatically degrading your pictures.
PNG files are a new replacement for GIF. They are better but they don’t work on many Level 4 Browsers.”

Screen capture software for taking your screen prisoner

Posted on November 20, 2007. Filed under: Freeware/Shareware, Graphics, Utilities | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

The Boreham  Library normally has screen capture software installed.  It’s called PrintKey 2000 and it’s activated by using the Print Screen key.  It allows you to save all or part of the screen to a file, or copy and paste into something else (your Word document or PowerPoint presentation, for example), or print all or just part of the screen, and offers a number of options.

This software has since become a “pay” software called Printkey-Pro.

Screen capture utilities are available from many sources, many of them freeware or shareware, too.

Clif Notes Newsletter has a review for one such freeware program called EasyCapture.  It has the advantage that you can edit the captured view inside the program, too.  It also runs from a USB drive, if you want to be sure you have it available.
